Cancer Expert Shares Eight Early Warning Signs of Cancer

While early warning signs of cancer can vary greatly depending on the type of cancer, there are some general symptoms to watch out for.

Cancer is a result of our cells’ genetic material becoming damaged or changed. Dr Wouter Hendrickx, principal investigator of the the Functional Cancer Omics Laboratory, in the cancer department at Sidra Medicine (part of Qatar Foundation), said: “Such alterations can occur due to a multitude of factors like ageing, exposure to certain chemicals and substances, lifestyle choices, and even inherited gene mutations.”

He ascertained: “Cancer is indeed a serious disease and regular screening and self-examinations are critical for early detection.” As part of self-examinations it’s also worth noting any unusual symptoms.

Early Symptoms of Cancer

Dr Hendrickx listed general, early indications of cancer:

  • Unusual lumps or swelling
  • Unexplained weight loss or gain
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Changes in the skin
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Persistent cough
  • Trouble breathing
  • Unexplained aches and pains.

“However, many of these symptoms can also be associated with conditions other than cancer,” said Dr Hendrickx.

“Thus, it’s vital to consult a healthcare professional if you experience any persistent or unexplained symptoms.

Cancer Treatments

Dr Hendrickx assured The pace of improvement in cancer treatments has been remarkable over the past few decades, and it continues to accelerate.

He added: “Advances in genomics have led to the development of personalised therapies, which tailor treatment based on the specific genetic makeup of a person’s cancer.

“Immunotherapy, which harnesses the power of the body’s immune system to fight cancer, is another area of rapid advancement.

“Similarly, progress in technologies like CRISPR gene editing and CAR-T cell therapies hold enormous potential.”

There has been a growing understanding of cancer biology, shifting from cancer cell proliferation to stroma and immune cells within tumours.

Dr Hendrickx said: “Recently, the role of the microbiome and its influence on our immune system has come to light.

“However, it’s essential to note that while progress is swift, the translation of this new knowledge into new treatments and their approval takes time to ensure safety and efficacy.”

Anybody experiencing signs of cancer are strongly recommended to seek the professional advice of their doctor.
